Eight years ago, when we first came to Cornwall, we had no experience of Bed and Breakfast, not even as guests as we always went self catering! As for large "Farm" animals, I used to be terrified of our sheep, they were so big! All of that is now behind us .... and as they say .. "If my friends could see me now!"
After falling in love with Penvith Barns and the area around Looe, we updated and improved the building and turned it into a successful business and comfortable home. One of our DIY missions uncovered the remains of a 13th century water wheel pit, which you can see under a glass floor. There is rumoured to be a smugglers tunnel running from it but as it is 15 feet below ground level, we haven't found it yet.
Early in 2005 we started our own herd of Pedigree Alpacas. We have called it Sunnydale Alpacas. Our tiny group of two males and two females has now grown to nearly 30 animals, with more due to be born here this summer. They are all very tame and love to be hand fed. If you click on the link you can see lots more pictures and read all about them. We have both huacaya (fluffy fleece) and suri (dreadlocks) types of alpaca here.
Living in this fabulous area, surrounded by our animals and the tremendous variety of wildlife and birds, has made us realise how fragile and precious our environment really is. We have always recycled our rubbish, but this year we are trying to reduce our packaging and our food miles. You will notice this in your bedroom, as I have reusable containers rather than the prepackaged portions from the wholesaler. I hope this is ok with you.
